A Structural Exegesis Model Proposal for the Quran

INTERPRETING SURAH AL-FATIHA AS THE CATEGORICAL AND FRACTAL CORE OF THE QURAN: A Structural Exegesis Model Proposal

Abstract

In this study, the hypothesis that Surah Al-Fatiha is not only a summary of the Quran but also a core structure that forms the categorical map of the entire Quran is examined. Based on the “Umm al-Kitab” (Mother of the Book) approach in classical exegesis (tafsir), it is argued that the fundamental themes contained in Al-Fatiha unfold in a fractal manner in the other surahs of the Quran. Accordingly, the entire Quran can be read as a holistic knowledge structure consisting of the elaboration of the main categories in Al-Fatiha at different scales.

1. Introduction

In Islamic tradition, Surah Al-Fatiha is known by names such as “Umm al-Kitab”, “Umm al-Quran”, and “al-Sab’ al-Mathani”. A significant portion of exegetes have stated that Al-Fatiha is the summary of the Quran. However, the concept of “summary” has generally been evaluated as a general resemblance. In this study, a stronger proposition is put forward:Al-Fatiha is not merely the summary of the Quran; it is the categorical core that forms the entire thematic structure of the Quran. According to this proposition, the other surahs are the historical, moral, legal, and metaphysical expansions of the fundamental principles found in Al-Fatiha.

2. Theoretical Background

2.1 The Concept of Umm al-Kitab

The following views stand out regarding Al-Fatiha in classical sources:

  • It is the essence of the Quran.
  • It contains the fundamental principles of faith.
  • It brings together tawhid (monotheism), the hereafter, and worship.
  • It summarizes the main messages of the Quran. This approach constitutes the starting point of the study.

2.2 The Concept of Fractal Structure

In fractal systems, structures seen at a small scale reappear at a large scale. The fundamental characteristic of a fractal structure is self-similarity in the form of: Y = F(Y) This study assumes that the Quranic text also exhibits thematic self-similarity to a certain extent.

3. Hypothesis

The main hypothesis can be expressed as follows: K = G(F) Here;

  • K = The entirety of the Quran
  • F = Al-Fatiha
  • G = Expansion/Elaboration operator Accordingly, the remaining surahs of the Quran consist of the explanation of Al-Fatiha in different dimensions.

4. Categorical Structure of Al-Fatiha

Category 1: Tawhid and Rububiyyah (Monotheism and Lordship) Al-Fatiha:Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘AlaminExpansions of this category:

  • Al-Baqarah
  • Al-An’am
  • Yasin
  • Al-Mulk Main theme:
  • Creation
  • Universal order
  • Allah’s sovereignty

Category 2: Rahmah (Mercy) Al-Fatiha:Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim Expansions:

  • Yusuf
  • Maryam
  • Az-Zumar
  • At-Tawbah Main theme:
  • Forgiveness
  • Compassion
  • Repentance

Category 3: The Hereafter and Justice Al-Fatiha:Maliki Yawmiddin Expansions:

  • Al-Qiyamah
  • Al-Waqi’ah
  • At-Takwir
  • Al-Infitar Main theme:
  • Judgment (Accountability)
  • Reward
  • Punishment
  • Justice

Category 4: Servitude (Worship) Al-Fatiha:Iyyaka na’budu Expansions:

  • Al-Ikhlas
  • Al-Kafirun
  • Al-Hajj
  • Al-Mu’minun Main theme:
  • Tawhid
  • Worship
  • Distancing from shirk (polytheism)

Category 5: Divine Assistance Al-Fatiha:Iyyaka nasta’in Expansions:

  • Al-Anfal
  • Ali ‘Imran
  • Yunus
  • Al-Qasas Main theme:
  • Supplication (Dua)
  • Trust in Allah (Tawakkul)
  • Divine support

Category 6: Guidance Al-Fatiha:Ihdina’s-Sirata’l-Mustaqim Expansions:

  • Luqman
  • Al-Isra
  • Al-Hujurat
  • An-Nur Main theme:
  • Morals/Ethics
  • Wisdom
  • Righteous living

Category 7: Historical Exemplars Al-Fatiha:Siratalladhina an’amta ‘alayhim wa ghayril maghdubi ‘alayhim wa-lad-dallin Expansions:Positive examples

  • Yusuf
  • Ibrahim
  • Maryam
  • Al-Anbiya Negative examples
  • Pharaoh
  • Qarun
  • ‘Ad
  • Thamud

5. Fractal Tafsir Model

The fundamental assumption of the model: Every surah is an expansion of one or more Al-Fatiha categories. For example:Surah Yusuf

  • Mercy
  • Guidance
  • The path of those who were given favor represents a triple expansion.Surah Al-Qiyamah
  • is the elaboration of the verse Maliki Yawmiddin.Surah Al-Ikhlas
  • is the intensified expression of the principle of tawhid within the scope of Iyyaka na’budu.

7. Discussion

Strengths of the model:

  • It explains the central position of Al-Fatiha.
  • It systematizes thematic exegesis.
  • It proposes structural relationships between surahs.
  • It allows interpreting the Quran as a holistic network system.

Limitations of the model:

  • Some of the mappings are interpretive.
  • One-to-one categorization may not be possible for every surah.
  • It needs to be further tested with statistical text analysis.

Conclusion

This study proposes a theoretical model suggesting that Surah Al-Fatiha is not merely a summary of the Quran, but also the categorical and fractal core of the entire Quran. By expanding the classical “Umm al-Kitab” understanding, the model explains the relationship between surahs through the principles of self-similarity and thematic expansion. This approach puts forward a new research program that can be tested in the future through computer-assisted semantic analyses, network theory, and fractal hermeneutics. In terms of academic contribution, the strongest next step is to predominantly map the 114 surahs of the Quran to the 7 main categories of Al-Fatiha and create a “Quranic Thematic Fractal Map”. This could transform the hypothesis from a qualitative evaluation into a measurable model.
