Scale Analysis of Theories in History

If we do this systematically, we can obtain one of the first serious tests for the scale blindness hypothesis.

In the following analysis, I apply an important principle:

The failure of a theory alone is not proof of scale blindness. But when a theory collapses, if the cause of the collapse is the incorrect identification of different scales, this supports the hypothesis.

Class A Cases: Strong Candidates for Scale Blindness

1. Caloric Theory (18th-19th Century)

  • Assumption: Heat is a fluid. An invisible substance called “caloric” flows between objects.
  • Scale Map:
ConceptActual Scale
Molecular motionMicro
Average energyStatistical
TemperatureMacro
CaloricHypothetical substance
  • Scale Error: Collective property: 𝑇 was interpreted on its own as a physical substance. That is: A transformation from Macro property → Micro object was made.
  • Conclusion: Caloric theory collapsed. This is a very strong example in terms of scale blindness.

2. Aether Theory

  • Assumption: If light is a wave, it must propagate in a medium.
  • Scale Map:
ConceptScale
Sound waveMechanical
Water waveMechanical
Electromagnetic fieldField scale
AetherMechanical medium
  • Scale Error: Mechanical wave logic ↓ was transferred to field theory. That is: A forced adaptation of Mechanical Medium ⇒ Field was made.
  • Conclusion: The aether was abandoned after the Michelson-Morley experiments. A serious scale transfer is seen here.

3. Entropy = Disorder

This partially continues even today.

  • Scale Map:
ConceptScale
MicrostateMicro
Probability distributionStatistical
EntropyInformation scale
DisorderIntuitive concept
  • Scale Error: Information measure ↓ was interpreted as physical disorder. However, there is no disorder within 𝑆 = 𝑘 ln 𝑊.
  • Conclusion: It did not fully collapse, but conceptual confusion continues.

Class B Cases: Partial Scale Mix-ups

4. Bohr Atom

  • Assumption: Electrons orbit like planets.
  • Scale Map:
ConceptScale
Planetary orbitMacro
Electron stateQuantum
  • Scale Error: Macro orbit ↓ was transferred to the atomic scale.
  • Conclusion: It was partially successful. But it could not turn into a complete theory. It was replaced by quantum mechanics. This can also be an example of medium-level scale blindness.

5. Wave-Particle Interpretation

  • Scale Map:
ConceptScale
Wave functionState space
Measurement resultPhysical
ParticlePhysical
  • The Issue: Most discussions stem from the assumption that 𝜓 = physical thing. However, 𝜓 might belong to the information layer.
  • Conclusion: Disagreement still continues among interpretations. This increases the suspicion of scale blindness.

Class C Cases: Theories That Achieved Scale Separation

Now let’s look at the reverse.

If the hypothesis is correct, scale separation should be strong in the most successful theories.

Newtonian Mechanics

It contains very clear layers: 𝑥 → 𝑣 → 𝑎 → 𝐹

The role of every magnitude is clear. Scale transitions are defined. Therefore, it is very successful.

Maxwell’s Equations

It separates the field from the particle. It defines the field’s own existence. This is a huge scale success.

Statistical Mechanics

Perhaps the most successful example of scale separation. Because it explicitly states: Micro ≠ Macro, and builds the following bridge: microstates → temperature → pressure. Here, the scale transformation is done consciously.

Initial Conclusion

The following table looks interesting:

TheoryStatusScale Blindness
CaloricCollapsedVery high
AetherCollapsedVery high
Bohr modelPartial successMedium
Entropy=disorderControversialMedium-high
Wave-particle interpretationsControversialMedium-high
NewtonSuccessfulLow
MaxwellSuccessfulLow
Statistical mechanicsSuccessfulVery low

Even this small sample gives an interesting signal:

Scale mix-up is indeed seen in a significant portion of unsuccessful or problematic theories; whereas successful theories clearly define the transitions between scales.

I think in the next stage, we should move on to more difficult cases:

  1. The relationship between space-time and energy in relativity
  2. The particle-field relationship in quantum field theory
  3. Dark matter
  4. Dark energy
  5. Black hole entropy
  6. Holographic principle

The real test will be in these theories. If scale blindness analysis shows explanatory power here too, the hypothesis can evolve from being merely a historical observation into a methodology of physics.
