When we move on to the Dark Energy analysis, the risk will grow even larger. Because what we observe there is not directly a substance, but the interpretation of the universe’s expansion behavior. Therefore, in terms of scale blindness, it is perhaps the most critical case.
Let’s move on to the dark energy analysis
I think dark energy is an even more critical case for the scale blindness hypothesis than dark matter. Because in dark matter, at least a gravitational effect is observed. In dark energy, however, what is directly observed is not a “substance”, but the expansion behavior of the universe.
We need to proceed very carefully here.
Step 1: What Are We Actually Observing?
Actually, the observed thing is the following conclusion derived from:
- Supernova measurements
- Galaxy distributions
- Cosmic microwave background data
𝑎̈ > 0
Meaning, the interpretation that the expansion rate of the universe is accelerating.
Therefore, what is directly observed is:
| Concept | Status |
| Supernova data | Observed |
| Redshift | Observed |
| Expansion model | Inference |
| Dark energy | Hypothesis |
The first scale distinction starts here.
Step 2: Scale Map
Scale-0
Local physics
atoms
particles
laboratory experiments
Scale-1
Astrophysics
stars
galaxies
Scale-2
Cosmological Scale
the entire universe
billions of light years
Scale-3
Model Parameter
Λ
Cosmological constant.
This is not a directly measured object.
It is a model parameter.
The following chain emerges:
Data → Cosmological Model → Λ → “Dark Energy”
The last step here is particularly important.
First Scale Blindness Candidate
A frequently heard expression today:
Dark energy is pushing the universe.
This expression might be physically problematic.
Because what is directly observed is:
a model parameter like Λ.
“Dark energy”, on the other hand, is the interpretation given to this behavior.
Therefore, it can be that:
Λ ≠ necessarily a physical fluid
Here:
mathematical parameter
↓
physical entity
transformation is being made.
This is a scale blindness candidate.
Second Scale Blindness Candidate
From Local Physics to Cosmic Physics
Today’s models assume the following:
Physics valid in the laboratory
↓
is also valid at the universe scale.
This has mostly turned out to be true.
But there is a huge scale leap here.
Approximately:
between 10⁻¹⁵ m and 10²⁶ m.
This is:
a leap of more than 40 orders of magnitude.
In my scale blindness approach, this is a situation that should automatically trigger an alarm.
Third Scale Blindness Candidate
The Vacuum Energy Problem
In QFT calculations, vacuum energy is predicted.
Then this value is compared with the cosmological constant.
Result:
a discrepancy of about 10¹²⁰ orders of magnitude.
One of the biggest problems in physics.
Scale map:
| Concept | Scale |
| Vacuum fluctuations | Quantum |
| Energy density | Field |
| Cosmic expansion | Cosmological |
Now the question is:
Do we really have the right to establish this equality?
Quantum Vacuum = Cosmological Energy
If there is a hidden scale shift here,
the 10¹²⁰ problem might perhaps stem from an incomplete scale map.
This is very important.
Fourth Scale Blindness Candidate
Accelerating Expansion = Energy Component
Observation:
𝑎̈ > 0
Inference from this:
There is a new energy component in the universe.
But is this mandatory?
No.
Logically, there are other possibilities as well:
- New energy component
- Modified gravity
- Scale-dependent spacetime
- Fractal geometry effects
- Large-scale averaging effects
Meaning:
Observed dynamic
↓
New matter/energy
equalization is not mandatory.
A possible scale blindness can also be found here.
From the Perspective of Fractal Relativity
The most critical question here would be:
In today’s equations, spacetime is:
defined by 𝑔μv (𝑥).
But there is no scale parameter.
If the true geometry is:
scale-dependent in the form of 𝑔μv (𝑥, 𝜆),
behaviors emerging at very large scales:
can occur solely due to scale transitions,
without a new energy component.
This is not yet a theory, but it is one of the possibilities that needs to be tested in terms of scale blindness.
General Assessment
If we were to calculate the scale blindness risk score for dark energy:
| Title | Risk |
| Interpreting Λ = as a physical fluid/energy | High |
| Quantum vacuum = cosmological energy | Very high |
| Local physics → universal physics direct transfer | Very high |
| Accelerating expansion → new energy is mandatory assumption | High |
| Equating observation with the model parameter | Very high |
The most interesting result in the analyses so far is this:
The biggest risk in relativity: the assumption of the same geometry at all scales.
The biggest risk in quantum field theory: equating state space with physical reality.
The biggest risk in dark energy: directly transforming a behavior observed at the cosmological scale into a new physical entity.
From the perspective of the scale blindness hypothesis, dark energy seems to be one of the strongest candidates among the examples we are currently examining. Because here, the layers between observation, mathematical model, and ontological interpretation are used very closely to one another.
